Grand Canyon Wins 2017-18 WAC Academic Excellence Award

DENVER – Grand Canyon has earned the 2017-18 WAC Academic Excellence Award. The award is determined by a point system and presented to the institution that performs the best in the following areas: the average grade-point average (GPA) for each undergraduate student-athlete, the average GPA of each undergraduate student-body compared to the average GPA of an institution's student-athletes and the most recent two-year average of institutional Academic Progress Rate scores.

"It is a great honor to win the WAC Academic Excellence Award," Grand Canyon Athletic Director Mike Vaught said. "This is a great example of hard work and dedication by our student-athletes. Special recognition to everyone at GCU who works with our student-athletes in the academic arena."
Grand Canyon was impressive across the board, as the Lopes posted an average GPA of 3.47 across all 21 varsity sports. The student-athlete GPA is 0.36 points higher than the average Grand Canyon undergraduate student. The Lopes were tied with Seattle U for the highest two-year average of APR scores at 985 out of 1000.

"Congratulations to Grand Canyon on earning the WAC Academic Excellence Award," Commissioner Jeff Hurd said. "The level of academic success across the conference is really quite impressive. All of our member schools should be proud of the academic accomplishments of their student-athletes."
