WAC Statement Regarding UIW
DENVER - Today the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) received notice from University of the Incarnate Word regarding the school’s intention to not join the league on July 1.
"The timing of today’s announcement just one week before UIW had committed to join the WAC as a full member is highly disappointing. This was unexpected, but at the same time, we are confident that our membership is unified in their commitment to being one of the premier mid-major conferences in the country," said WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton.
“The intercollegiate athletics landscape is constantly changing. The WAC is in a position to build a special league. We are committed to supporting our member institutions as they compete for championships at the conference and national levels as well as producing enriching experiences for student-athletes.”
The WAC crowns team and individual champions in 20 sports – 10 men’s and 10 women’s. The conference will consist of 14 member institutions in the 2022-23 school year. Abilene Christian University, California Baptist University, Grand Canyon University, Lamar University, New Mexico State University, Sam Houston State University, Seattle University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Tarleton State University, Utah Tech University, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Utah Valley University. Southern Utah University and The University of Texas at Arlington will become official members on July 1.
