CBU's Karinauskaite Breaks Own Record, Utah Valley Men and Women Lead After Day 2
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – California Baptist’s Greta Karinauskaite put on a show in the final event of the second day at the WAC Outdoor Track and Field championships, winning the 3000m steeplechase and breaking her own WAC championship record by 23 seconds with a time 9:35.6. That is also the best time in the NCAA this season.
Utah Valley holds the lead in both the men’s and women’s team standings after some strong performances on Friday afternoon.
TEAM STANDINGS
On the men’s side, UVU’s Aaron Johnson captured the long jump title with a leap of 7.77m. Johnson was also the WAC champ at the conference indoor championships.
Sam Houston won two throwing events as Luke Thielemann, is the WAC's best in the hammer throw with a toss of 61.26m while fellow Bearkat Cobe Graham is the WAC shot put champ at 17.93m.
Lucas Van Klaveren of UT Arlington captured WAC gold in the Decathlon scoring 7457 points.
Southern Utah’s Hayden Harward closed out the events on the men’s side with a win in the 3k steeplechase in a time of 8:43.96.
On the women’s side host Stephen F. Austin had a pair of winners as Angel Richmore wins the heptathlon with 5496 points and Michelle Ogbemudia takes the top spot in the shot put with a throw of 16.24m.
Southern Utah’s Jentry Skidmore wins the WAC long jump title with a leap of 6.20m while UTRGV’s Marlene Gutierrez is the hammer throw champ at 62.03m.
The final day of the WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will begin on Saturday at 10 am CDT at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches. Live coverage will be on ESPN+ at 330 CDT with Chase Merrell and Kyle Charbonneau.
