MESA, Ariz. – After the designated road teams were both victorious in the opening round of the tournament the previous day, the higher seeded teams picked up wins on day two of the 2025 University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on a beautiful day at Hohokam Stadium. No. 3 Utah Valley blitzed No. 7 UT Arlington 17-7 in eight innings before No. 4 Grand Canyon scored a 7-6 comeback win against No. 8 Utah Tech on Wednesday evening.
The 2025 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament resumes with its busiest day of the week on Thursday, featuring four total games that include two elimination contests. No. 2 Abilene Christian makes its debut this week against No. 3 Utah Valley in the top half of the bracket at 9:30 a.m. MST, and No. 1 Sacramento State takes on No. 4 Grand Canyon at approximately 12:30 p.m. MST elsewhere in the top part of the bracket.
The winners of Thursday’s first two games advance into the semifinal round on Friday at 11 a.m. MST. The non-advancing team from the ACU-Utah Valley clash will meet No. 8 Utah Tech in an elimination game on Thursday at approximately 4 p.m. MST. Either Sacramento State or GCU will close Thursday with an elimination showdown against No. 7 UT Arlington at approximately 7 p.m. MST. All games will air live on ESPN+.
Game 3 – No. 3 Utah Valley 17, No. 7 UT Arlington 7 (8) (Box Score)
It was an impactful opening game for No. 3 Utah Valley, as the Wolverines belted out 18 hits and scored runs in six of eight inning to stop No. 7 UT Arlington after eight frames. Utah Valley raced out to a 4-0 lead after one before UTA answered with six in the top of the second inning to take a 6-4 advantage. UVU would respond with 13 of the final 14 runs scored in the game to pull away from the Mavericks.
Landon Frei led a potent Utah Valley offensive attack with a 4-for-6 day at the plate, driving in three runs while scoring twice. Jayden Smith contributed a team-high four RBIs, and Dominic Longo II added three hits, three RBIs and a team-high four runs that included the winning tally on a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. Carston Herman allowed one run on five hits in six innings of relief to earn the win.
Xavier Melendez clubbed a home run and drove in three runs for UTA in defeat, and Cade Dodson ripped two hits and scored twice. Parker Airhart added two RBIs to the cause for the Mavericks.
Game 4 – No. 4 Grand Canyon 7, No. 8 Utah Tech 6 (Box Score)
No. 8 seed Utah Tech scored in four of the final five innings to build a 6-2 lead over No. 4 Grand Canyon headed to the bottom of the eighth, but the Lopes responded with five runs in the frame to take a 7-6 advantage to the ninth inning. Utah Tech pushed the tying run to second base in the top of the ninth before all-conference reliever Walter Quinn shut the door for GCU to earn his 11th save of the season.
Eddy Pelc, Eli Paton and Marcus Galvan each drove in two runs to guide the GCU comeback win, as seven different Lopes crossed the plate during the ballgame. Seven separate GCU players also finished the game credited with at least one hit.
Finnegan Stewart and Levi Randall each recorded three base hits in defeat for Utah Tech, with Randall scoring a team-high three runs in the setback. Five different Trailblazers were credited with RBIs in the contest.
