SAN ANTONIO - New Mexico State sophomore infielder Nick Gonzales has been named the National Player of the Month and Texas A&M junior southpaw John Doxakis has been tabbed the National Pitcher of the Month for February, it was announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Thursday afternoon.
The NCAA leader in hits (28), homers (six), hits per game (3.11) and RBI (27) during February, Gonzales has shined under Coach Brian Green's tutelage at New Mexico State. He hit .636 (28-for-44) during the month, with four doubles, one triple, a 1.182 slugging percentage and a .630 on-base clip, stealing two bases. A native of Vail, Ariz., Gonzales was named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year after hitting .347 with 17 doubles, nine homers and 36 RBI in 2018. Through his first 13 starts of 2019, Gonzales has hit .590 (36-for-61) with six doubles, one triple, 10 homers and 37 RBI.
Doxakis, a native of Houston, Texas, worked two strong starts to lead Texas A&M to a strong start to 2019. He won both starts, allowing just an unearned run over 13 innings to open the year, surrendering just four hits and two walks, striking out 20. Over his first three starts in 2019, Doxakis is 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in 21 innings, allowing only eight hits and two walks, striking out 32. He worked eight one-run innings with 12 strikeouts in a win over No. 18 Baylor in his first start of March.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that the NCBWA has honored a player and pitcher of the month. Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball.
