CSUB Defeats Cal State Fullerton to Advance in CIT

FULLERTON, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield survived a Cal State Fullerton rally and held on for a 66-58 win over the Titans in the first round of the Tournament Thursday night.

The Runners now await the date, opponent and location of their second-round matchup.

James Suber was named Riley Wallace Classic MVP after he posted his sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Jarkel Joiner added 17 points, while Taze Moore finished with 11.

CSUB jumped out to a 14-5 lead midway through the first half on a Moore three-pointer and led by 18, 34-16, at halftime.

The Titans opened the second half on a 13-0 run to cut the CSUB lead to five, 34-29. By the midway point in the half, the Runners had pushed their lead back to nine.

But CSF wouldn't go away. The Titans chipped away and tied the game at 53 with 2:33 remaining. Suber then made back-to-back layups and the Runners made 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute of the game to seal the victory.

Neither team shot the ball well. CSU Bakersfield shot just 32 percent from the field, 23 percent from downtown and 83 percent from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Cal State Fullerton connected on 36 percent from the floor, 26 percent from three-point range and 90 percent from the free throw line on the game. The Runners out-rebounded the Titans 44-37.
