EDINBURG, Texas – Playing in front of the home crowd for the second straight postseason game, the UT Rio Grande Valley men's basketball team hoped to give the fans something to smile about. Unfortunately for the UTRGV faithful, it was Texas Southern mounting a second-half comeback to advance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament with a 94-85 win.
In the first half, the Vaqueros shot well, making 17-of-35 attempts from the field to take a five point lead into the break at 41-36. Despite being ahead on the scoreboard, Texas Southern held a 22-15 advantage in rebounding in the first 20 minutes.
The Tigers simply could not miss in the second half, shooting 72.7 percent from the field on 24-of-33 shooting as TSU put up 58 second half points. UTRGV held a 10-point lead with 14:09 left to go but the lead wouldn't last as Texas Southern took over the advantage with 6:06 left to play and the Tigers simply never looked back.
Tyson Smith led the Vaqueros in scoring with 18 points. Terry Winn III added 17 points and Jordan Jackson chipped in 15 points. Leslie Varner II rounded out the UTRGV players in double-digit scoring with 11 points. Javon Levi also had a strong game, scoring seven points to go with 13 assists and seven steals.
UTRGV finishes the season with a record of 20-17.
