This Week in WAC Men's Tennis - Feb. 7
NMSU, SU, UMKC, AND GCU REPRESENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
NM State's Louis Menard and Seattle U's Martina Asciuto, Kansas City doubles team Tom Kruse and Daniel Izadifar and Grand Canyon doubles team Emilia Occhipinti and Celina Buhr have been named the Men's and Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for January 29-Feb. 4.
 
Menard, a sophomore from Annecy, France, remained undefeated in duals adding three more wins on the season. He moves to 4-0 defeating opponents from UNLV, UC Riverside, and Hawaii over the weekend. His most dominating win came against UC Riverside as he clinched the victory 6-2, 6-1.
 
Asciuto, a freshman from Irvine, Calif., finished the weekend 3-0 winning against competition from Whitman, Eastern Washington, and Lewis-Clark State. Her biggest victory was over Eastern Washington defeating Stephanie Broussard 6-4, 7-5.
 
Kruse, a junior from Flensburg, Germany, and Izadifar, a junior from Tonsberg, Norway, advanced to 2-1 on the year in doubles play picking up wins over Illinois State and Northern Illinois. The duo put away competition 6-3 and 6-4. 
 
Occhipinti, a junior from Ragusa, Italy, and Celina Buhr, a junior from Hamburg, Germany, won their third match in a row against CSU Fullerton. The pair won by a close margin, 7-5.
 
Other male singles nominees: Kansas City's Ben Stride added two wins against Illinois State and Northern Illinois. 
 
Other female singles nominees: Emilia Occhipinti of Grand Canyon won her fourth singles match in a row over CSU Fullerton… Kansas City's Riddhi Sharma won against South Dakota 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
 
Other male doubles nominees: NM State's Luis Flores and Nicolas Buitrago won against UNLV but left two other matches against UC Riverside and Hawaii unfinished. 
 
Other female doubles nominees: Katie Fries and Thanushree Vale lost twice in close matches to South Dakota and Nebraska.
 
THIS WEEK IN WAC MEN'S TENNIS
CHICAGO STATE
The Cougars finished the week 1-3 picking up a 9-0 win over Prairie State College. CSU lost their first match to Illinois State 0-6, followed by a loss to Northern Illinois 0-4 and ended the week in a 0-7 loss to Northwestern.
 
KANSAS CITY
Kansas City lost 1-6 to Nebraska, 3-4 to Illinois State and 1-4 to Northern Illinois. Ben Stride grabbed the one victory over Nebraska 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. Against Illinois State, UMKC jumped out to a lead earning the doubles point.  Diego Giraldo and Stride both won their singles matches as the Roos fell one match shy of victory. Again, Stride was the solo win for Kansas City against Northern Illinois.
 
NM STATE
The Aggies were defeated 1-4 by UNLV but bounced back with 4-0 and 4-1 victories over UC Riverside and Hawaii. Louis Menard earned a singles win 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 against his UNLV opponent. NMSU swept UC Riverside before claiming a dominating win over Hawaii.
 
SEATTLE U
Seattle U lost their solo competition 1-6 against Portland State. Adrian Sanabria earned a singles win 7-6, 6-2.
 
UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
UT Rio Grande Valley dropped two falling to Baylor 0-4 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1-6. Zane Kohrs earned the only win for UTRGV against AMCC, 6-4, 6-1.
 
2019 WAC TOURNAMENT
The 2019 WAC Men's and Women's Tennis Tournaments will be hosted by UT Rio Grande Valley on April 26-28 in Brownsville, Texas. All six teams will compete in the Tournament as the first round will be No. 4 seed against No. 5 seed and No. 3 seed takes on No. 6 seed. No. 1 and No. 2 seeds earn a ticket straight to the semifinals. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as the WAC representative. The reigning tournament champion is NM State as they defeated NM State 4-0 in the Championship match last year.
 
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2019 Tennis National Championships will take place in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus Collegiate Center on May 16-25.
