DENVER- Kansas City's Anil Patel and Seattle U's Kali McCollister, UT Rio Grande Valley doubles team Mateo Schmit and Michael Loyd and Chicago State's doubles team Diana Borodina and Katarina Drazic have been named the Men's and Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 12-18.
Patel, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., went 2-1 over the weekend picking up a big win over an opponent from Arkansas. His first win came against Coe College 7-5, 6-1. He dropped a match to Iowa 1-6, 3-6 before bouncing back for a victory over Arkansas, 6-4, 6-4.
McCollister, a junior from Portland, Ore., remains unbeaten in singles on the season earning three more wins over the weekend. She defeated Puget Sound 6-0, 6-0 followed by Lewis & Clark 6-1, 6-1. Her final win came over Montana State 6-2, 6-4.
Schmit, a junior from Neuquen, Argentina, and Loyd, a sophomore from Corpus Christi, Texas, won 6-4 over Lamar and Southern Miss. It was their first two wins as a team this season and their victory over Lamar was the only doubles win for UTRGV. The pairs' win over Southern Miss clinched the doubles point.
Borodina, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, and Drazic, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, won against a duo from Northern Illinois, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point. They sit at 4-0 as a duo this season.
Other male singles nominees: Grand Canyon's Freddie Grant earned a win over Saint Mary's and is now 6-0 on the season… Zane Kohrs of UT Rio Grande Valley is on a three-match win streak after earning two more against Lamar and Southern Miss.
Other female singles nominees: Chicago State's Diana Borodina clinched a team win over Northern Illinois with a 6-0, 6-0 victory… Celina Buhr of Grand Canyon won twice against opponents from Utah State and Weber State.
Other male doubles nominees: Grand Canyon's Lucas Grego and Freddie Grant have won four in a row and clinched the doubles point against Saint Mary's… Ben Stride and Diego Giraldo of Kansas City won twice against Coe College and Iowa.
Other female doubles nominees: Kansas City's Michela Xibilia and Yana Grechkina earned victories against Central Arkansas and Arkansas State and moved to 3-1 together this year.
