WAC Tennis Athletes of the Week Announced

DENVER- Grand Canyon's Mathieu Rajaonah and NM State's Harsha Challa, and Grand Canyon's doubles team Lorenzo Fucile and Mathieu Rajaonah and UT Rio Grande Valley's doubles team Dominique Ibarra and Marine Darzyan have been named the Men's and Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 26-March 4.

Rajaonah, a senior from Marseille, France, won 6-2, 7-5 over an opponent from UCLA. As a team, UCLA is ranked No. 23 in the nation. This win advances Rajaonah to 5-4 in singles play on the season.

Challa, a sophomore from Hyderabad, India, has won six straight matches with two left unfinished. This weekend she defeated competition from Montana State, 6-2, 6-4, and from Wyoming, 7-5, 6-3. Her win over Wyoming was her first from the No. 2 slot.

Fucile, a junior from Messina, Italy, and Rajaonah, a senior from Marseille, France, won 6-4 over a pair from UCLA. The duo extends their perfect record to 7-0 and clinched the doubles point for GCU with the victory.

Ibarra, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, and Darzyan, a senior from Volgogrod, Russia, picked up their fourth win as a duo, 6-4, against Houston.
Other male singles nominees: Kansas City's Neil O'Connor was one game away from a sweep over Lindenwood winning 6-0, 6-1 from the No. 4 spot… Martin Simicek of NM State won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 against UT Arlington… UT Rio Grande Valley's Mateo Schmit finished the weekend 2-1 posting victories over Laredo Community College and UTSA.
Other female singles nominees: Chicago State's Diana Borodina has won six of her last seven matches with her two most recent being victories against Omaha and Creighton… Thanushree Vale of Kansas City won 6-3, 6-4 over Oklahoma… UT Rio Grande Valley's Dominique Ibarra won her fourth straight match 6-3, 6-4 over Houston to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Other male doubles nominees: Ben Stride and Diego Giraldo moved to 5-2 overall in the No. 1 doubles slot with a 6-1 convincing win over Lindenwood… NM State's Enrique Asmar and Louis Menard won 6-2 against UT Arlington advancing to 4-2 in dual play…

Other female doubles nominees: Chicago State's Maria Kuzminskaya and Anastasiia Goncharova won 6-1 against Omaha earning CSU the doubles point… Lindsay Harlas and Yadira Rubio defeated a duo from Wyoming 6-2.
