DENVER- NM State's Stijn de Haan and UT Rio Grande Valley's Dominique Ibarra and UT Rio Grande Valley's doubles team Clement Sarradin and George Hutchings and Grand Canyon doubles team Autum Prudhomme and Celia Morel have been named the Men's and Women's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for March 19-25.
de Haan, a senior from Veldhoven, Netherlands, sealed the team win for the Aggies with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over his Southern Miss opponent. NM State defeated Southern Miss 4-3. de Haan earned the win from the No. 1 slot.
Ibarra, a senior from Barcelona, Spain, finished the weekend 3-0 and extended her win streak to ten matches in a row. She earned her first win over Chicago State, 6-2, 6-1 followed by a hard-fought victory over NM State 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Her final win came in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Seattle U. Ibarra moves to 10-2 in singles play on the spring season.
Sarradin, a junior from Clarensac, France, and Hutchings, a freshman from Lancashire, England, posted two wins over duos from Nicholls State and Alcorn State. The pair first defeated Nicholls State 6-2 followed by a narrow victory over Alcorn State, 7-5. Both wins helped UT Rio Grande Valley to earn the doubles point.
Prudhomme, a sophomore from Glendale, Ariz., and Morel, a junior from Passy, France, finished the week 4-0 with three wins coming in conference play. They are the only Grand Canyon duo to remain undefeated in WAC play. The pair beat opponents from Idaho State, Seattle U, Kansas City, and NM State. Playing from the No. 3 slot, the duo has won seven matches in a row and clinched three doubles points for the Lopes throughout the win streak.
Other male singles nominees: Grand Canyon's Leo Andreolli played in the singles lineup for the first time this season and swept his opponent, 6-0, 6-0… Hunter Clark of Kansas City posted a come-back win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Northwest Missouri State to clinch the team win… UT Rio Grande Valley's Georgije Babic went 2-0 on the weekend picking up his second and third wins of the season over Nicholls State and Alcorn State.
Other female singles nominees: Grand Canyon's Celia Morel advanced to 10-5 on the season snagging four more wins throughout the week… Katie Fries of Kansas City defeated an opponent from NM State but fell in a match to Grand Canyon… NM State's Harsha Challa remains undefeated in WAC play and has won nine straight matches earning three more over the weekend.
Other male doubles nominees: Grand Canyon's Lucas Grego and Freddie Grant won 6-1 against a University of the Southwest duo… Diego Giraldo and Ben Stride posted a 6-3 win pushing their season record to 8-3 as a pair… NM State's Louis Menard and Enrique Asmar added another win topping Southern Miss 6-3.
Other female doubles nominees: Kansas City's Michela Xibilia and Yana Grechkina defeated a pair from Grand Canyon and improved their season record to 4-5 from the No. 1 spot… Lindsay Harlas and Yadira Rubio have won four straight matches and five of their last six together finishing this weekend with a perfect 3-0 record in conference play… UT Rio Grande Valley's Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra improved to 8-4 and clinched the doubles point against Chicago State and Seattle U.
