DENVER- NM State's Louis Menard and Grand Canyon's doubles team Jakub Novak and Valentin Lang have been named the Men's Western Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week for March 26-April 1.
Menard, a sophomore from Annecy, France, stretched his win streak to six-straight matches and started conference-play 3-0. Menard earned non-conference wins over New Orleans and Nicholls State followed by three wins in WAC-play. He defeated an opponent from UT Rio Grande Valley, Chicago State, and Kansas City all in straight sets. Menard is the first Aggie to reach 20 overall wins with a 21-10 singles record and 12-6 in dual play.
Novak, a freshman from Prostejov, Czech Republic, and Lang, a junior from Mulhouse, France, opened conference-play with a 3-0 start. The duo defeated pairs from Kansas City, Seattle U, and Chicago State clinching the doubles point in two of the three matches. They have won ten matches straight.
Other male singles nominees: Chicago State's Gonzalo Martinez has won four of his last six matches picking up the latest against NM State and Grand Canyon… Freddie Grant of Grand Canyon improved to 12-5 on the season earning three conference wins over the weekend… UT Rio Grande Valley's Yehonatan Kaufman finished the weekend 2-1 and recorded UTRGV's lone point against NM State.
Other male doubles nominees: NM State's Mauri Benitez and Stijn de Haan posted a record of 3-1 on the week and 2-1 in WAC-play defeating Nicholls State, UT Rio Grande Valley, and Chicago State… Mateo Schmit and Clement Sarradin posted a perfect 3-0 in conference-play and moved to 5-2 on the season as a duo.
