WAC Tennis Athletes of the Month Announced
DENVER – Kansas City singles player Diego Giraldo and Grand Canyon singles player Natasha Puehse, and Grand Canyon's doubles team Valentin Lang and Jakub Novak and UT Rio Grande Valley's doubles team Sandra Putz and Katarina Sasaroga have been named the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Month for October.
 
Giraldo, a junior from Medellin, Colombia, went 2-2 in October and was one of only two mid-major players to qualify for the round of 16 at the ITA Central Regional. Giraldo, ranked 28th in the field of 32, picked up wins over Omaha's Alvaro Quintana and Iowa's Nikita Snezhko. In the round of 16, the junior saw opponent Mark Mandlik of Oklahoma. Giraldo dropped the first set 6-2 but was able to battle back and win the second set 6-1 before falling in the final set 6-3. 
 
Puehse, a freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., finished October with two wins and one loss as she advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Southwest Regional in Malibu, Calif. In the 128-player singles women's draw, Puehse defeated Marina Tryina of San Diego and Ekaterina Repina of Cal State Northridge on her way to the quaterfinals. In the round of 16, Puehse fell to No. 7 seed Daria Kuczer of Pepperdine 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
 
Lang, a senior from Mullhouse, France, and teammate Novak, a sophmore from Prostejov, Czech Republic, finished October with a 4-2 record. The duo advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Southwest Regional after they took down the team of Alejandro Reguan and Carlos Hassey of Arizona by a score of 8-4. Earlier in the month, the team of Lang and Novak picked up win's over Arizona's Nick Lagaev and Jared Horwood as well as UC Irvine's Bruce Mad Son Hing and Mateusz Smolickic at the Aztec Fall Invitational.
 
Putz, a sophmore from Munich, Germany, and Sasaroga, a sophmore from Gothenburg, Sweden, had a busy month as they went 3-4 in October. The doubles team snagged a win in the main doubles draw at the ITA Texas Regional. The victory came over Texas State's Andrea Fuchs and Alyssa Zayat and adavnced Putz and Sasaroga to the round of 32. The Vaquero team also managed wins over Louisiana's Floriane Picaut and Dana Radovanovic and Texas State's Josefina Cassara and Rishona Lewis during the month of October.
 
Other male singles nominees: Grand Canyon's Valentin Lang went 4-4 including advancing to the round of 32 at the ITA Southwest Regional.
 
Other female singles nominees: Kansas City's Riddi Sharma competed at the ITA Central Regional where she qualified for the main draw... Seattle U's Jade Lancaster became the first Redhawk in school history to advance past the second round in the ITA Regional tournament... Sandra Putz UT Rio Grande Valley went 3-5 in October and won the Flight C Singles Championship at the Bearkat Invitational.
 
Other male doubles nominees: Seattle U's Alex Chan and Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Northwest Regional.
 
Other female doubles nominees: Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse and Jana Weiss advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Southwest Regional... Seattle U's Jillian Rasmussen and Martina Asciuto won the consolation bracket at the Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash.
