WAC Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Announced

CSU Bakersfield's Chris Hipa and Grand Canyon's Yesenia Morrison have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 25-March 3. This is the first-ever honor for Hipa and the first honor of the season and third of her career for Morrison.

Hipa, a senior utility player from Aiea, Hawaii, led CSU Bakersfield a 2-0 record at the rain-shortened Red Desert Classic last weekend. She went 6-for-9 (.667) from the plate while hitting a home run in each contest. Hipa also tallied a double, four RBIs and six runs and wrapped up the tournament with a 1.444 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage. Hipa opened the tournament with a 4-for-5 showing against Southern Utah, including a solo homer. Against Saint Mary's, she was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Hipa now ranks fourth in CSUB's Division I history with 11 career home runs.

Morrison, a sophomore right-hander from Grand Terrace, Calif., went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA last week. She threw a pair of complete game shutouts with 14.0 scoreless innings to improve her season ERA to 1.05. She opened the week with a win over South Dakota, allowing five hits over seven innings and striking out one. On Saturday, she earned a complete-game win over Iowa State, striking out two over seven innings and allowing just four hits. For the week, Morrison dished three strikeouts and allowed no walks and scattered just nine hits to improve to 3-2 this season.

Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: California Baptist's Anise Avalos hit .286 with two RBIs and one stolen base ... Shea Smith of Grand Canyon hit .438 with a double, one home run, two runs scored and four RBIs ... Kansas City's Maegan Rollow hit .600 with two homers, three RBIs and a stolen base ... Ally Choate of Seattle U hit .500 with one home run and three RBIs.

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: California Baptist's Kellye Springstead went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and four strikeouts over 6.2 innings ... Kiara Azevedo of CSU Bakersfield went 1-0 with a 5.25 ERA and four strikeouts ... Kansas City's Mia Hoveland of went 1-0 with a 2.10 ERA and 10 strikeouts over 10.0 innings ... Carley Nance of Seattle U went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and seven strikeouts over 14.0 innings.
