DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley's Omer Almog and Grand Canyon's Trey Johnson have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 22-28.
Almog, a senior from Jerusalem, Israel, earned first out of 36 competitors in the Mile Run at the Houston Invitational. Almog crossed at 4:10.65 for his second victory of the season. It was the second fastest time in program history and leads the conference this season.
Johnson, a freshman from Tolleson, Ariz., won the Long Jump at the New Mexico Team Challenge with a leap of 7.37 meters. In his first collegiate outing, Johnson posted the second best jump this season in the WAC.
Other track nominees: Grand Canyon's William Winfield notched a conference-leading time in the 60 hurdles at 8.08… Josh Sanders of Kansas City recorded the second-best 1,000 meter time in school history… Utah Valley's Brandon Edmondson won the 800 in a time of 1:57.03.
Other field nominees: Jamarice Preston of Kansas City posted the fifth-best mark in the WAC in High Jump going 2.04 meters… UT Rio Grande Valley's Christian Hall-Gardner placed seventh in the Shot Put tossing it 14.76 meters and eighth in the Weight Throw at 14.08 meters.
