DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley's Ashley Hughes and NM State's Taniya Mitchell have been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Hughes, a junior from Chicago, clocked in at 56.14 in the 400 meter to set a new program record. She finished eighth out of 72. She also took ninth out of 90 in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.81. Her 200 time is the third-fastest in school history. Hughes also ran on the 4x400 who finished sixth and sits second-fastest in program history.
Mitchell, a senior from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., set a new program record in the Weight Throw while placing first. She recorded a throw of 18.77 meters to top the NM State record books. She sits best in the conference in the Weight Throw.
Other track nominees: NM State's Asjah Wallace recorded a time of 59.71 in the 400 and 8.74 on the 60m hurdles.
Other field nominees: Grand Canyon's Madelyn Lundberg notched a personal-best in the pole vault going 4.02 meters and became only the third Lope in school history to jump 4.00 meters or higher.
