DENVER – UT Rio Grande Valley's Yariel Matute and Grand Canyon's Trey Johnson have been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Matute, a senior from Mission, Texas, ran program record-setting times in the 200 and 400 meter dash. He ran the 200 in 21.56 to finish sixth out of 83 competitors and set a new program record. In the 400 he clocked a 48.08 for eighth out of 86 and the second-fastest time in school history. He also helped the 4x400 relay to fourth place and a new program record (3:15.11).
Johnson, a freshman from Tolleson, Ariz., won the Long Jump at the Mountain T's Invite with a leap of 7.76 meters. He broke the school record in just his second collegiate meet and ranks tied for 17th in the nation. Johnson is currently best in the WAC.
Other track nominees: Grand Canyon's William Winfield placed third in the 60 hurdles with a time of 7.99.
Other field nominees: Albert MacArthur continued his dominance in the jumps winning the Long Jump and Triple Jump and breaking the previous program records.
