DENVER – NM State's Brooke Salas has been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 17 through Dec. 23.
Salas, a senior guard from Placentia, Calif. (El Dorado HS), recorded her first career triple-double to cap off a week that saw her average 22.0 points per game and 15.3 rebounds per game. She opened the week with 16 points and nine rebounds in a win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday. NM State then traveled to Miami for the FIU Holiday Invitational and in the first game of the tournament, she totaled 18 points and 15 rebounds, also adding six assists and five steals, in a one-point loss to South Alabama. Her best game came on Friday as she scored 32 points to go with 22 rebounds and 11 blocks for the triple-double.
Other nominees included: California Baptist's Britney Thomas notched her eighth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds in a 76-64 win at UC Santa Barbara … Chicago State's Ines Mata Boix scored 16 points with nine rebounds in a loss at Northern Illinois … Grand Canyon's ShaRon Miller scored 12 points in a GCU loss at Santa Clara … Kansas City's Ericka Mattingly set career highs in points in back-to-back games with 26 points against SIUE and 29 points against Louisiana Tech … UT Rio Grande Valley's Quynne Huggins scored 25 points as the Vaqueros played tough with 12th-ranked Texas in front of a sellout crowd at UTRGV Fieldhouse … Utah Valley's Eve Braslis averaged 10.0 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game in a pair of home wins over Weber State and UC Riverside.
