DENVER – NM State's Brooke Salas has been named Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 14 through Jan. 20. It is her third time honored this season and her ninth career honor.
Salas, a senior guard from Placentia, Calif. (El Dorado HS), had a pair of double-doubles to propel the Aggies into a tie for first place in the WAC standings. Against Seattle U, the reigning WAC player of the year had 21 points to go with 11 rebounds, two assists and a steal in a 75-55 win over the Redhawks. She followed that up with 15 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, a block and a steal to help hand Utah Valley its first WAC loss of the season with a 58-52 Aggie win. Salas is second in the WAC in scoring this season at 18.6 points per game and third in the league in rebounding at 11.1 per game.
Other nominees included: California Baptist's Ane Olaeta scored 27 points in CBU's record-setting 133-43 win over Westcliff on Thursday … CSU Bakersfield's Malayasia McHenry recorded back-to-back double-figure scoring games as the 'Runners went 2-0 on the road … Chicago State's Alexandria Cliff had the buzzer-beater to give the Cougars their first win of the year in a 50-48 win over Grand Canyon … UT Rio Grande Valley's Madison Northcutt put up her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a loss to Utah Valley … Utah Valley's Jordan Holland hit the game-winning basket in the Wolverines' 57-55 win at UT Rio Grande Valley.
