UT Rio Grande Valley went on the road to open the Women's Basketball Invitational but North Texas showed why they are called the Mean Green, defeating UTRGV, 56-42.
North Texas got out to an early lead, holding a 20-10 advantage after the first quarter. The Vaqueros managed to stop the bleeding a bit in the second quarter, cutting the deficit down to seven at halftime, 31-24.
An early backet by Idil Turk early in the third quarter pulled UTRGV back within five at 31-26 but the Mean Green pushed the lead back into double-digits quickly. UTRGV could never find a way back into the contest, falling 56-42.
UTRGV was led by 17 points from Megan Johnson and 10 points and six rebounds from Madison Northcutt. North Texas picked up 19 points from Anisha George.
The Vaqueros end the season with a record of 18-15 under first-year head coach Lane Lord.
