Playing in its first women's basketball postseason game in NCAA Division I history, California Baptist battled tough against visiting Pepperdine but it was the Waves moving on with a 91-79 victory in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
The first half was a battle with the two teams exchanging multiple leads. CBU pushed the lead to six points with 2:22 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Tiena Afu for what would be the biggest lead either team would hold in the first 20 minutes before CBU took a 41-37 lead into the halftime break.
After CBU again pushed the lead early in the third quarter, Pepperdine began its comeback, retaking the lead with 6:50 left in the period. The Wave managed to push the lead to six with 1:53 left in the third and continued to control the momentum the rest of the way, billowing to a 91-79 win.
The Lancers were led in scoring by 21 points from Britney Thomas. Caitlyn Harper added 17 points and six rebounds while Ane Olaeta chipped in 16 points to go with four assists.
CBU shot 49.2-percent from the field, making 29-of-59 attempts. The Lancers were outrebounded, 52-31, giving up 16 second-chance points. California Baptist ends their inaugural Division I campaign with a record of 18-12, including a second place finish in the WAC regular season standings.
