DENVER – California Baptist's Desarae Felix and UT Rio Grande Valley's Kinga Szemik have been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Sept 17-23.
Felix, a senior midfielder from Norco, Calif. (Corona), finished the week with three goals and an assist. She led California Baptist to two wins. In a match against Hope International, Felix scored two goals and assisted another for a 3-1 victory. She then lifted the Lancers to a 3-2 win over Cal Poly to extend their unbeaten overtime streak with a goal in the 104th minute of play. Felix currently leads her team and is placed second in the conference with seven goals on the year.
Szemik, a junior goalkeeper from Pietrzykowice, Bielsko, Poland, recorded her first shutout of the season in a match against Omaha. She helped UTRGV to a 1-0 victory with five saves. Szemik has made 33 saves and allowed only ten goals on the season. This is her third time being named WAC Defensive Player of the Week this season.
Other offensive nominees: Claire Nelson of CSU Bakersfield added her fourth and fifth career goals in a 2-1 2OT win over University of Pacific… Kansas City's Reighan Childers finished with five points including a game-winning assist in a win against South Dakota… Emily Zapata of UT Rio Grande Valley posted her third game-winning goal of the season in a 1-0 overtime victory against Omaha… Utah Valley's Whitney Paskins scored UVU's first-ever goal against BYU.
Other defensive nominees: Hannah Bruce of Utah Valley held down the Wolverine defense in a 3-1 loss to BYU.
