DENVER – Kansas City's Rylan Childers and Afton Fennewald have been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Sept 24-30.
Childers, a freshman forward from Grain Valley, Mo. (Grain Valley), recorded eight points in her first two conference matches of her career. In a 3-0 win against UT Rio Grande Valley, Childers tallied two goals and an assist. She followed with another goal and assist against CSU Bakersfield as the Roos won 4-0. Childers finished with 12 total shots placing eight on goal.
Fennewald, a freshman goalkeeper from Lake Winnebago, Mo. (Notre Dame de Sion), made a career high 11 saves in her first career conference match against UT Rio Grande Valley. She also picked up her second and third shutouts of the season. Fennewald made 11 saves in the Roos' 3-0 win and helped Kansas City to a 4-0 shutout against CSU Bakersfield. She started both matches and played all 180 minutes over the weekend.
Other offensive nominees: California Baptist's Lanai Navarro scored two goals in a 6-0 win over Chicago State… Marissa Beale of Chicago State scored her fourth goal of the season against CSU Bakersfield… Grand Canyon's Sarah Inafuku netted her first goal of her collegiate career helping the Lopes to their first road win… Emily Zapata of UT Rio Grande Valley scored her seventh goal of the season in a win over Utah Valley… Utah Valley's Whitney Paskins scored a goal in each match this weekend.
Other defensive nominees: Audra Wisehart of Chicago State produced 18 saves in two matches including 17 saves in a loss to California Baptist… Grand Canyon's Mikaela McGee played all 90 minutes while helping her team to a 1-0 win… Ariana Romero of Seattle U allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of action and made 11 saves… Utah Valley's Leesa Stowe anchored the defense in a shutout victory and added a goal and an assist.
