Tony Jones joined the WAC in July of 2022 and serves as the assistant commissioner, communications. Jones is the primary conference communications contact for a number of WAC sports that include men's basketball, men's soccer and baseball.
Jones arrived at the WAC after spending the previous three years as the assistant director of communications at the American Conference (2019-22). Jones oversaw communications efforts for 14 different conference sports while at The American including women’s basketball, men’s soccer, softball, golf and track and field.
Prior to The American, Jones spent seven years in the athletics communications office at the University of Notre Dame (2012-19). Jones worked as the primary publicity contact for the Notre Dame softball (2012-19) and men’s soccer (2015-17) programs and was the contact for a variety of other Fighting Irish teams that included women’s soccer, swimming and diving, golf, women’s tennis and rowing. Jones promoted 26 All-Americans, three national player of the year finalists and five conference players of the year during his time at Notre Dame.
Jones was also responsible for Notre Dame football in-game notes and research for three seasons from 2016-18, as well as the production of the weekly Fighting Irish football game notes package and Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic postseason media guide during the 2018 campaign. The 2018 Notre Dame football notes and bowl guide were rated second and third in the nation, respectively, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (now known as College Sports Communicators).
Jones previously worked as an athletics media relations intern at the University of Louisiana Monroe during the 2011-12 academic year, was a summer 2010 new media intern with the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills and spent two seasons as the media relations manager of the Jamestown Jammers (2008-09), the former Single-A minor league affiliate of Major League Baseball's Miami Marlins.
A native of Jamestown, New York, Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism/mass communication with a minor in history from St. Bonaventure University.
