2024 WAC Softball Postseason Awards Announced

ARLINGTON, Texas – The major award winners and all-conference teams for the 2024 WAC softball season were revealed on Monday, as voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches. Grand Canyon’s Ashley Trierweiler was named WAC Player of the Year, Grand Canyon’s Hailey Hudson earned WAC Pitcher of the Year, Grand Canyon’s Savannah Kirk captured WAC Freshman of the Year, Seattle U’s Karen Spadafora was selected as WAC Defensive Player of the Year and Grand Canyon’s Shanon Hays was voted by his peers as the WAC Coach of the Year.

Trierweiler led the WAC with a .489 batting average over 26 conference games, which included two home runs and 18 RBIs. Trierweiler had an on base percentage of .544 and led the conference in runs scored with 32 during WAC play. She added 169 putouts and nine assists in the field for the Lopes. 

Hudson posted an undefeated record of 8-0 and a 1.89 ERA across 11 games (9 starts) in the circle for Grand Canyon. Hudson pitched two complete games and one shutout during conference play, a 1-0 win over Stephen F. Austin on Apr. 26. Over 55.2 conference innings pitched, Hudson issued 44 strikeouts and had an opposing batting average of .228. 

Kirk was second in the WAC with a .456 batting average in her debut season. She had a .482 on base percentage, 12 RBIs, 16 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in 26 conference games. Kirk added 38 putouts and 54 assists in the field during WAC play. 

Spadafora made 26 starts at catcher for Seattle U during the conference slate. She registered 94 putouts and 14 assists in 108 chances behind the plate for a perfect fielding percentage against WAC opponents. 

Hays led Grand Canyon to its fourth conference regular-season title posting a 23-3 WAC record to earn the top seed in the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Softball Tournament. The Lopes batted .346 as a team and scored 189 runs. Grand Canyon swept six of its eight conference series during the 2024 season. 
 
Grand Canyon led all teams with seven players included on WAC all-conference teams, with four players on the first team. California Baptist boasted five all-conference honorees, while Seattle U and Utah Valley had two selections each.
