Grand Canyon Captures 2023 WAC Women’s Soccer Championship Title

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Grand Canyon continued its unbeaten streak with a 4-2 win over No. 3 Seattle U to capture the 2023 WAC Women’s Soccer Championship Title at CBU Soccer Stadium. The Lopes earned their second WAC championship title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.
 
Grand Canyon dominated offensively with 27 total shots and 11 shots on goal, holding Seattle U to 10 shots and five on goal. Seattle U held the edge in corner kicks 5-3.
 
Grand Canyon’s Bekah Valdez scored the first goal for the Lopes at 20:15, assisted by AJ Loera. In the second half, Leah Pirro tallied a goal from Carly Waller to give the Lopes a 2-0 edge. 2023 WAC Offensive Player of the Year and WAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Gianna Gourley scored a goal at 61:04 to extend her single-season program record to 21. At 66:39, Maddie Brady finds the bottom right corner of the net to give the Lopes an impressive 4-0 lead.
 
Seattle U would battle back as Kaylee Coatney secured the first goal for the Redhawks at 74:39. The Redhawks immediately scored another goal as Katie Piburn and Emma De La Cruz connected to chip away at the gap. Grand Canyon’s defense would not allow another Seattle U goal, holding the Redhawks to just one shot until the end of regulation.
 
The Lopes now await the NCAA Division I Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. CT on NCAA.com, where they will learn who they will face in the first round. The first round of the tournament is set to start on Friday, Nov. 10 across multiple locations, while the championship game will be on Monday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. CT in Cary, NC.
