DEFENDING SEVEN-TIME WAC MEN’S CHAMPIONS AIMING FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT

Grand Canyon has won every WAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship dating back to 2016 and looks to keep that trend rolling with another championship next week. Last year, the Lopes won the championship with 139.5 points, beating runner-up Stephen F. Austin who accumulated 100 points. The last time the championship was held in Albuquerque (2022), GCU won the meet with 201.5 points, totaling more than twice the points of SFA who finished second with 96.5.

Defending seven-time WAC Coach of the Year Tom Flood has led the Lopes to all of their last WAC titles and has another trophy in sight with key returners Erin Brown and Eric Cabais-Fernandez who have each won two WAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Weekly Awards this year. In total, GCU has taken seven out of the twelve possible 2024 men’s weekly awards.

GCU WOMEN LOOKING TO TAKE BACK THE THRONE

Grand Canyon’s last women’s title came two years ago, which happened to be the last time the Albuquerque Convention Center hosted the WAC Indoor Track & Field Championship. The Lopes look to rekindle some of that Albuquerque magic and take their sixth women’s championship in the last eight years. Since 2016, the GCU women’s team has yet to finish worth than fourth in the final standings.
