Edgar Guerra have been named the University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men’s Soccer Offensive Players, Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Week, for the match week ending on Monday, Aug. 25.
Jones, a freshman winger from England, made an immediate splash for CBU in his first match week stateside for the 2-0-0 Lancers. Jones scored three goals and added an assist on five total shot attempts, with all three of his shots on target finding the back of the net. In 50 minutes as a reserve against American University on Aug. 21, Jones tallied goals in the 38th and 40th minutes before assisting on the match-winner from Stavros Charalampous in the 65th minute of a 3-2 CBU victory. Earning his first career start at CSU Bakersfield on Aug. 25, Jones helped erase a deficit by scoring the match winner unassisted in the 65th minute to help lift CBU to a 2-1 win.
Diouf, also a freshman forward, was equally impactful during his collegiate debut weekend for 2-0-0 GCU. Diouf matched Jones with three goals and one assist, including a match winner, while scoring on three of his five official shots on goal. After re-entering as a substitute in the 71st minute of the season opener against Jacksonville on Aug. 21, Diouf collected his first career goal unassisted in the 81st minute before finishing a mad scramble in front of the frame with 14 seconds remaining for his second of the night to lift the Lopes to a 2-1 comeback triumph. In his first career start against Cleveland State on Aug. 25, Diouf assisted on the match-winning goal in the 71st minute before collecting an insurance score of his own in the 74th minute of an eventual 3-1 GCU victory.
Pogue, a redshirt junior wingback, helped key an impressive Utah Valley defensive effort that yielded a total of three shots on goal in a 2-0-0 start. The Wolverines limited CSU Bakersfield to just five total shots (one on goal) while Pogue scored the first goal in the new UCCU Stadium enroute to a 4-0 clean sheet on Aug. 21. Against Gonzaga on Aug. 24 in Sandy, Utah, Utah Valley limited the Bulldogs to only two shots on target while Pogue contributed an assist on the second goal of a matching 4-0 shutout win.
Guerra, a redshirt senior goalkeeper, was stellar for San José State in a 2-0-0 start to the season. Guerra was credited with five saves, including three in the second half, of a 2-0 shutout of Cal Poly on Aug. 21. Guerra was up to the task once more at Saint Mary’s (Calif.) on Aug. 24, turning aside three shots in the match with a key stop in the final minute of play that set up the winning Spartan goal in the final 10 seconds of a 2-1 team victory.
