Utah Valley Leads Following Day One Of The 2026 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas
– Utah Valley was the top team on both sides of the standings on Thursday evening following day one of the 2026 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Maverick Stadium. The Wolverines scored 49 points in four scored women’s events with two individual champions and 21 points in two scored men’s events to claim the night one lead.

Host UT Arlington was second in the women’s standings with 48 points, followed by Southern Utah with 28. Abilene Christian was in the second spot in the men’s standings with 17 points and California Baptist was third with 16 points.

Utah Valley's Morgan Nokes amazing 2025-26 campaign continued with a win in the women's 10,000-meter run. Nokes bested the field with a winning time of 34:06.21. She was also the Outstanding Track Performer at the WAC Indoor Track & Field championships in February and won the WAC Cross Country individual championship in October. UT Arlington’s Dorcas Jepkosgei secured second place with a time of 34:52.44 and UVU’s Reagan Doman brought home third place after crossing the line in 35:05.62.

Wolverines sophomore Emily Conlin won the WAC championship in the women’s pole vault by clearing 4.00m (13-01.50) to claim the gold. UTA's Simona Cabella checked in at second place after clearing a season best 3.80m (12-05.50), while Mavericks teammate Ava Lin secured third place after clearing 3.70m (12-01.50).

In the women’s hammer throw, Tarleton State’s Tayler Wessely won the event with a top attempt of 63.25m (207-06), good for number 27 in the NCAA this year. UT Arlington's Jaalah Puryear was second with a throw of 56.95m (186-10) and ACU’s Mariana Van Dyk finished third with a top mark of 55.22m (181-02).

Southern Utah's Jaylee Gandert was on top of the podium in the women's javelin with a throw of 47.57m (156-01). Wolverines Freshman Kate Carter was number two with a 44.71m (146-08) effort, followed by UT Arlington's Eliza Lemberga in third at 44.34m (145.05).

In the men's events, California Baptist's Jude DeVries held off a hard-charging Porter Whitworth of Utah Valley to win the 10,000-meter in a time of 30:15.33, as Whitworth finished with 30:16.35. CBU’s Roberto Castro Lara had a third-place time of 30:25.55.

Rhet Punt from Abilene Christian brought home the initial men’s first place points of the meet in the hammer throw, closing with a winning toss of 64.70m (212-03). UVU’s Eddie Garcia was second with a 56.62m (195-07) effort, followed by SUU’s Andrew Cooper in third place following an attempt of 57.46m (188-06).

Several preliminary races were also held on Thursday. WAC record holder Victoria Cameron of Tarleton State had the best time in the 200m going 22.93. In the 1500m Southern Utah Freshman Aspen Hacker ran a 4:33.70 for the best qualifying time in the 1500m. Utah Valley's Ella Hopper had the best prelim in the 400m hurdles at 59.53.

On the men's side, Utah Valley's Alex Hartshorn ran the top time in the 1500m with a 3:52.97. Wolverines teammate Gavin Stafford ran the 18th fastest time in the NCAA this season in the 200m going 20.50. ACU's Ryan McMeen won his heat in the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.95.

The finals for the 1500m, 200m and 400m hurdles will be on Saturday, May 16.

Day two of the WAC Outdoor Track & Field championships starts on Friday, May 15 at 9 am CT with the men's decathlon 110m hurdles.
