No. 5 CBU Wins 2022 WAC Men’s Soccer Championship
2022 WAC MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH BOX SCORE
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No. 5 seed California Baptist completed a historic week at the CBU Soccer Stadium, claiming the 2022 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament in a 3-1 penalty kick shootout after drawing 0-0 with No. 2 seed San José State on Sunday afternoon in front of a record crowd of 1,416. The Lancers earned their first NCAA Championship automatic bid with the result and became the first men’s soccer program from the WAC to capture the tournament as host since Fresno State in 1998.
San José State closed the match with a 16-12 edge in total shots, including a 12-6 edge in the second half and overtime periods. CBU held the edge in corner kicks 6-5 on the day.
After the match finished 0-0 following 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods per new NCAA rules, a penalty shootout was needed to decide the WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament for the sixth time in championship history. Bryan Iliohan, Anthony Vargas and Luis Mueller each connected from the spot for CBU, while Kasper Poulsgaard scored the lone shootout tally for San José State.
