ARLINGTON, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) unveiled on Friday its 2023 men’s soccer major award winners and all-conference teams as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Seattle U’s
James Morris was named WAC Offensive Player of the Year, while California Baptist’s
Thomas Beecham earned WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Seattle U’s
Charlie Lanphier captured WAC Goalkeeper of the Year, and CBU’s
Drew Hardin claimed WAC Freshman of the Year. Seattle U head coach
Nate Daligcon was selected as the WAC Coach of the Year.
Morris, a senior forward, was the Seattle U and WAC leader with 10 goals, seven assists and 27 points during 17 matches in the regular season. Morris contributed four goals and four assists for 12 points in eight starts during conference play. Morris was the second student-athlete from Seattle U to capture WAC Offensive Player of the Year, joining
Miguel Gonzalez in 2013.
Beecham, a senior defender, was limited to eight matches for CBU but made an impactful return to the Lancer lineup on Oct. 1. CBU posted a 5-1-2 record in conference play with Beecham in the lineup, which included four shutout victories. Beecham became the first CBU recipient of the WAC Defensive Player of the Year award in men’s soccer.
Lanphier, a sophomore goalkeeper, fashioned a 10-1-2 record during the regular season that included a 1.02 goals against average, a .725 save percentage and five solo shutouts. Lanphier was the WAC leader with a 0.75 GAA in eight conference matches, earning a result in all eight (7-0-1) of his conference starts.
Hardin was an impact rookie for CBU, notching three goals and three assists for nine points over 16 matches played (12 starts). Hardin was the first player from the Lancers to claim WAC Freshman of the Year accolades.
In his first season as head coach, Daligcon led Seattle U to a 12-2-3 overall record and a 7-0-1 conference mark in the 2023 regular season to earn the fourth WAC tournament top seed for the Redhawks since the program joined the conference prior to the 2013 season. Daligcon was the second Seattle U men’s soccer coach to win the conference coach of the year in the WAC, joining the legendary
Pete Fewing in 2013, 2015 and 2019.
