PHOENIX – No. 2 Seattle U fashioned a strong performance on a chilly night at GCU Stadium, as the Redhawks controlled the run of play early to pave their way to a 3-0 win over No. 5 San Jose State on Saturday in the 2024 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament final in front of a spirited crowd.
Seattle U captured its sixth WAC championship in as many appearances in the tournament final, the most of any men’s soccer program in conference history. The Redhawks were 11-5-6 all-time in WAC tournament play. Seattle U held an 18-5 shots advantage over San Jose State, including 9-3 in shots on goal.
Luke Hammond opened the scoring for Seattle U in the 22nd minute, making an artful run up the left flank to gather in a drop pass from
Titus Washington. Hammond buried a left-footed strike into the upper 90 at the near post for his first goal of the season and the 1-0 Redhawk lead at 21:41. Seattle U added an insurance goal in the 30th minute, as
Andre Philibbosian and Washington set up
Davis Mungomba for a sitter inside the penalty area. Mungomba’s first goal of 2024 made it 2-0 Seattle U at 29:43. The Redhawks enjoyed a 10-4 shots edge in the opening half, including 6-2 in shots on goal.
Demian Alvarez got in on the scoring for Seattle U in the 61st minute, slotting home his first of the season on a looping free kick service from
Yeider Zuluaga. Alvarez deposited the ball into the lower right of the goal for a 3-0 Redhawk cushion at 60:37.
Alvarez led six Seattle U players on the all-tournament team as the 2024 WAC Most Outstanding Player. Other Redhawks honored were Hammond, goalkeeper
