ARLINGTON, Texas – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) unveiled on Friday its 2024 men’s soccer major award winners and all-conference teams as voted on by the league’s head coaches. San Jose State’s

Demian Alvarez earned WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. San Diego State’s
Djibril Doumbia was voted the WAC Goalkeeper of the Year, and Seattle U’s
Edgar Leon claimed WAC Freshman of the Year. San Diego State head coach
Ryan Hopkins rounded out the major award winners by capturing WAC Coach of the Year.
Iniguez, a junior midfielder, was the tied for the WAC lead with seven assists over 16 matches during the regular season, finishing third overall with 21 total points (seven goals and seven assists). Iniguez was the leading scorer in conference play, notching six goals and four assists for 16 points in just seven WAC starts. Iniguez’s three goals against Air Force on Oct. 3 and three assists against Grand Canyon on Oct. 31 were both the top single match performances in the WAC during the regular season. Iniguez became the first San Jose State player to capture WAC Offensive Player of the Year accolades.
Alvarez, a senior defender, started the first 16 matches of the season for Seattle U and helped guide the Redhawks to a 9-4-3 record (6-1-1 in WAC matches) and three clean sheets. Seattle U capped the regular season ranked third in goals allowed (21) and average goals allowed per match (1.24) in the WAC, while the Redhawks faced only 23 total shots on frame during conference play and allowed the second fewest goals in the league (six) in WAC matches. Alvarez was the fourth Seattle U player to be named WAC Defensive Player of the Year and the first since Nkosi Burgess in 2019.
Doumbia, a senior goalkeeper, posted an 8-3-2 record across 13 regular season starts, ranking second in the conference with six solo shutouts and a 1.18 goals against average. Doumbia was at his best in WAC play, logging a 7-0-1 mark with his six clean sheets, an 0.25 goals against average and a .905 save percentage over eight matches. Doumbia capped the unbeaten conference campaign for San Diego State with four straight shutouts.
Leon was a standout midfielder for Seattle U in his debut season, scoring four goals and adding one assist over 17 matches played (12 starts) for the Redhawks. Leon’s goals included the tying tally in a 1-1 draw with UCF on Aug. 25 and an insurance goal in a 4-3 win over CSUN on Sept. 27. Leon was the fifth Seattle U player to be selected as WAC Freshman of the Year, and the first since James Morris in 2019.
In San Diego State’s first season in the WAC since 1998, Hopkins guided the Aztecs to the first regular season conference title in program history with a 10-4-3 overall record and unbeaten 7-0-1 league slate to capture the top seed in the 2024 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament. San Diego State won eight matches that were decided by one goal during the regular season and sat at number 43 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings as of Nov. 6.
