MESA, Ariz. – Tarleton State continued its momentum that has served the Texans all through the week, and California Baptist won back-to-back contests on Friday night to advance to the final round of the 2024 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament at Hohokam Stadium.
No. 5 Tarleton State and No. 4 CBU are set to meet on Saturday at 3 p.m. MST in the conference championship round on ESPN+. If CBU wins the initial contest, an if-necessary matchup with a winner-take-all stipulation between the teams is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. MST.
Game 9 – No. 5 Tarleton State 11, No. 2 Abilene Christian 1 (7)
No. 5 Tarleton State clinched its first WAC title game appearance with a dominant win in seven innings over No. 2 seed Abilene Christian, ripping 10 hits for the game and tallying seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning alone. Seven of the nine starters for the Texans finished the game with at least one base hit.
Ike Shirey drove in a game-high three runs for Tarleton State, with
Cris Enriquez and
Hunter Smith chipping in two RBIs apiece. Four Texans came across to score two runs each in the triumph, including
Mason Hammonds,
Trace Morrison,
Cole Miears and
Kooper Shook.
Game 10 – No. 4 California Baptist 15, No. 7 UTRGV 9
No. 4 California Baptist fought off elimination once more against a game No. 7 UTRGV squad, scoring seven runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead for good. The Lancers ripped 18 hits as a team, including five that went for extra bases.
Four different CBU players finished the game with three hits, led by
Mitchel Simon’s 3-for-6 outing with five RBIs.
Nick Dumesnil reached safely four times and came around to score in each plate appearance.
Ryan Hetzler threw a spirited six innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out four to earn the win.
Steven Lancia and
Isaac Lopez each smashed three hits in defeat for UTRGV, with Lancia matching
Adrian Torres with three RBIs against CBU. Torres also added a team-high three runs scored.
Game 11 – No. 4 California Baptist 7, No. 2 Abilene Christian 6
No. 4 California Baptist advanced to Saturday play with a second consecutive win, ousting No. 2 Abilene Christian in the final Friday showdown. The Lancers answered a four-run ACU top of the third inning with a three-spot of their own in the home half.
Josh Paino closed the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs to pace the CBU offense, and
Julian Alvarez added two hits and scored two runs in the win.
Nick Dumesnil chipped in a pair of runs to the Lancer cause.
Jacob Wilson tossed 3.2 innings of two-hit scoreless relief to pick up the victory, walking one and striking out two.
Gino D’Alessio rocked three hits and drove in two runs for the ACU cause, and
Garrett Williams scored twice in the game for the Wildcats.
