RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No. 3 Grand Canyon and No. 4 San Jose State kept the winning momentum rolling in the 2025 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament on Wednesday night at CBU Soccer Stadium. GCU upset second-seeded Utah Tech 5-0 in the first match before San Jose State knocked off No. 1 seed and host California Baptist 3-2 in overtime in a thrilling nightcap of semifinal action.
San Jose State will make its sixth all-time appearance in the WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament final, while GCU returns to the championship match for the fourth time. The fourth-seeded Lopes defeated the sixth-seeded Spartans 1-0 in the 2018 WAC final in Seattle.
The 2025 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. (PT) inside CBU Soccer Stadium live on ESPN+.
No. 3 Grand Canyon 5, No. 2 Utah Tech 0 (Box Score)
Utah Tech finished the contest with a 12-8 edge in shots over Grand Canyon, but the Lopes found the back of the net on five of their seven shots on goal. WAC Offensive Player of the Year Junior Diouf scored goals in the 73rd and 86th minutes, assisting on the winning goal and the third GCU tally of the match. Max Kiefer chipped in the winning goal and an assist for the Lopes, along with Richard Tabares adding a goal and an assist.
GCU goalkeeper Daniel Ibarra logged four saves for his sixth solo shutout of the season and second of the tournament.
No. 4 San Jose State 3, No. 1 California Baptist 2 (OT) (Box Score)
San Jose State defeated the No. 1 WAC seed for the third time in a semifinal in tournament history, with its first against a host in California Baptist. The Spartans outshot the Lancers 17-14 during the match, with each team finding frame six times.
Arnold Matshazi scored the winning goal for San Jose State just 2:30 into the first overtime period, shoveling home a loose ball in front of the CBU frame for his second goal of the tournament. Dane Pendelton had previously leveled the match for the Spartans with a goal in the 43rd minute, and Angel Iniguez briefly put San Jose State in front in the 70th minute with a free kick goal.
Adolfo Pino opened the match’s scoring with a CBU goal in the 33rd minute that gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Liam Jones answered the Iniguez goal just over 2:50 later with an incredible run down the left flank to tie the contest at 2-2 in the 72nd minute.
San Jose State goalkeeper Edgar Guerra made four saves in the overtime victory, while his CBU counterpart Hugo Do Rego turned in three saves.
