RIVERSIDE, Calif.
– In a match impacted by unseasonable weather in the state of California, No. 3 Grand Canyon and No. 4 San Jose State battled to the last whistle in the final Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men’s Soccer Tournament championship match in the conference’s storied history. When all was said and done the sun emerged and GCU secured its second ever WAC men’s soccer tournament title with a 2-1 win on Saturday at CBU Soccer Stadium.

GCU added the 2025 WAC tournament hardware to a title captured in 2018 in Seattle, which was a 1-0 decision in that season’s final over San Jose State. The Lopes finished the 2025 final with a 13-6 edge in total shots over the Spartans, with a narrow 5-3 edge in shots on goal.

Following an extended weather delay at halftime due to heavy rains in the area, GCU broke a scoreless tie with the opening goal in the 66th minute. Felipe Cobian rocketed a brilliant left-footed free kick inside the right post from 25 yards out to put the Lopes in front 1-0 at 65:40. Less than 25 seconds later, GCU regained possession and Alan Hermitte fed Junior Diouf down the middle of the field. Diouf finished his 17th goal of the season and it was suddenly 2-0 GCU at 66:04.

San Jose State kept pushing to remain in the match and found a breakthrough in the 85th minute. Dane Pendleton worked his way to the right of the GCU penalty area and fired a laser right-footed blast inside the far post. The Spartan goal at 84:12 set the final scoreline at 2-1.

Diouf led six Grand Canyon players on the final WAC men’s soccer all-tournament team as the 2025 WAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Other Lopes honored were Ben Assane, Cobian, Viggo Gustavsson, Daniel Ibarra and Charles Volcy. Representing San Jose State on the all-tournament team were Angel Iniguez, Arnold Matshazi, Gilberto Rivera and Pendleton. The other honoree was California Baptist’s Liam Jones.
