Grand Canyon Earns Top Seed for 2025 WAC Women’s Golf Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas – Grand Canyon has secured the No. 1 seed for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Women’s Golf Championship at the Wigwam Golf Club Gold Course in Phoenix, Arizona on April 14-16 after registering the best national team ranking among WAC members according to Clippd.
 
The 2025 WAC Women’s Golf Championship will begin with round one on Monday, April 14 with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. MST.
 
Grand Canyon has won two tournaments in the 2024-25 season, claiming the top prize at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Feb. 25-26 and the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona on Mar. 14-16. The Lopes have finished in the top five in seven of their 11 tournaments this year and recorded a team-best score of 9-under-par at the 2024 Rainbow Wahine Invitational hosted by Hawaii on Oct. 21-23 where they finished third. The Lopes will attempt to win their second WAC title and the first since 2018.
 
The reigning team champion, Seattle U, is seeded fourth for this year’s tournament as the Redhawks look to defend their title and go back-to-back. Seattle U won this year’s PSU Invitational on Oct. 14-15 where senior Rivekka Jumagulova won the individual title. The Redhawks have also recorded a team-best score of 9-under-par at Seattle U’s Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational on Sept. 30 – Oct. 1 where they finished second in the 17-team field. Key returners for Seattle U include Jumagulova, Aaryanna Morris, Annika Cruz, Tsara Ralamboarison, and Shayna Lu.
 
Abilene Christian’s junior Ryann Honea is looking to defend the conference individual title at Wigwam next week, as Honea was crowned the champion at the 2024 WAC Women’s Golf Championship after shooting 4-over-par (217). Honea is the highest nationally ranked player in the WAC according to Clippd, checking in at No. 85. Honea has won this year’s BGSU Women’s Intercollegiate on Feb. 11-12 with a final score of 5-over-par and ACU’s West Texas Classic on Mar. 3-4 with a score of 2-under-par. Honea has posted four combined tournament scores under par this season, with her best of 5-under-par coming at the Riverbend Intercollegiate hosted by Houston Christian on Mar. 10-11 where Honea finished runner-up. Honea and the Wildcats are seeded second for this year’s tournament.
