Utah Valley Ahead Of The Pack Following Day One Of The 2025 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas
– Utah Valley was the top team on both sides of the standings on Thursday evening following day one of the 2025 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Maverick Stadium. The Wolverines scored 65 points in four scored women’s events and 23 points in two scored men’s events to claim the night one lead.

Grand Canyon was second in the women’s standings with 22 points, followed by Southern Utah with 21 points. Abilee Christian was in the second spot in the men’s standings with 16 points and UT Arlington was third with 15 points.

Utah Valley got off to a soaring start in the women’s hammer throw, with Elyssa Shaw capturing her first conference title in the event with a first round throw of 55.19m (181-1). Tarleton State’s Tayler Wessely placed second with a top attempt of 54.57m (179-0) and ACU’s Kailey Roskop finished third with a top mark of 54.42m (178-6).

The first Utah Valley WAC championship in the women’s pole vault was earned by Grace Williams, who cleared 3.92m (12-10.25) on her third and final attempt to claim the gold. Teammate Jocelyn Phillips checked in second after clearing 3.82m (12-6.25), and Southern Utah’s Ariana Baker secured third place after clearing 3.67m (12-0.50).

Josh Hoekendorf from UTA brough home the initial men’s first place points of the meet in the hammer throw, closing with a winning throw if 57.09m (187-3). ACU’s Sutton Welch was second with a 56.98m (186-11) effort, followed by Utah Valley’s Eddie Garcia in third place following an attempt of 55.47m (182-0).

Utah Valley’s Kelsi Oldroyd was dominant on her way to a third straight conference title in the women’s javelin, unleashing a round one throw of 56.85m (186-6) to pace the field. Southern Utah’s Jaylee Gandert earned runner-up honors with a top attempt of 48.54m (159-3), followed by GCU’s Lucy George in third with a fourth round throw of 43.47m (142-7).

Pedro Marin from CBU locked up the top spot in the men’s 1500-meter run prelims, crossing the line with a time of 3:48.63. Teammate Valentin Soca, the 2023 WAC champion in the event, was second with a time of 3:49.38. Other automatic finals qualifiers included Utah Valley’s Alex Hartshorn (3:48.65), Southern Utah’s Santiago Gaitan (3:50.61), Utah Valley’s Abdulsalam Farah (3:49.16), UT Arlington’s Alex Kalmar (3:51.51), Utah Valley’s Gilbert Olivas (3:49.25) and CBU’s Daniel Abdala (3:51.65).

Defending champion Winnie Kipsang from UTA kickstarted her title defense in the women’s 1500-meter run with a top qualifying time of 4:32.56. Utah Tech’s Lexi Larsen was the second runner through in 4:36.98, followed by Southern Utah’s Isabella Evans in third after crossing the line with a time of 4:32.81. Additional automatic qualifiers were CBU’s Laura Acuna (4:37.16), Utah Valley’s Oakley Olson (4:34.72), Seattle U’s Lilianne Hargreaves (4:37.21), Utah Valley’s Elizabeth Ferrell (4:34.81) and Southern Utah’s Audrey Hales (4:37.48).

Tarleton State’s David Mvundura locked up the top time in the men’s 200-meter dash prelims with a time of 20.88 to pace the field. Utah Valley’s Gabe Remy (20.89) and Cameron Franklin (21.07) were two and three, respectively, with GCU’s Miguel Rosario (21.11) and Southern Utah’s Jaedyn Carpenter (21.18) also in the top five. UTA’s Eli England (21.30), Utah Valley’s Kade Thompson (21.30) and ACU’s Ethan Krause (21.31) also qualified for the event finals.

Sensational sophomore Victoria Cameron from Tarleton State ran the fastest women’s 200-meter dash time at the WAC meet since 2018, crossing the line in 23.04 to pace the field. Teammates Lauren Roy (23.52) and Hanna Dudley (23.74) comprised the top three, along with additional automatic qualifiers Quincy Bonds from Utah Valley (23.77) and Amandine Estival from Tarleton State (23.85). Joining the event finals were UTA’s Adeyemi Talabi (23.93), GCU’s Nina Thevenin (23.97) and Utah Valley’s Ella Hopper (24.17).

Two-time WAC 400-meter hurdles champion Davicea McCartney from GCU began his title defense in the event with a top preliminary showing of 51.90. Teammate Cameron Wilmington was second in 53.00, and Tarleton State’s Braylon Hoffman clocked in third with a time of 53.87. ACU’s Kenan Reil (53.45), Tarleton State’s Omar Mahmoud (53.76), Utah Valley’s Brayden Walker (54.08), Tarleton State’s Noah Newman (54.27) and Utah Valley’s Jackson Egbert (54.73) also punched tickets into the finals.

Tarleton State’s Taylor McFarland grabbed the top qualifying time in the women’s 400-meter hurdle prelim heats, clocking a 1:00.91 showing to lead the field. UTA’s Zaire Moore locked up the second automatic slot with a time of 1:00.95. Utah Valley’s Kali McEuen (1:01.02) and Whitney Fisher (1:01.48) were third and fourth, respectively, joining additional qualifiers Indyia Walton from UTA (1:01.59), Utah Tech’s Megan Jenkins (1:02.79), Utah Valley’s Harmony Lopez (1:02.94) and Utah Tech’s Ilena DeHart (1:03.09).

Mohamed Guled continued a successful competition season representing Utah Valley by adding a conference championship in the men’s 10000-meter run. Guled bested the field with a winning time of 30:32.33. Tarleton State’s Angel Gomez secured second place with a time of 30:50.46 and Abilene Christian’s Andruw Villa brought home third place after crossing the line in 31:03.28.

Utah Valley completed the sweep of the 10000-meter competitions, as Anna Martin became the sixth Wolverine in the past seven years to win the women’s race at the WAC meet with an impressive performance. Martin clocked a time of 35:14.38 for the top placement. UT Arlington’s Matro Jepkemboi recorded a PR time of 35:49.06 to earn runner-up honors, followed by CBU’s Karolina Bliujute with a third-place time of 36:14.96.
