No. 3 Utah Valley, No. 1 Sacramento State Remain Unbeaten At 2025 University Credit Union WAC Baseball Tournament

MESA, Ariz. – Heading into semifinal play, No. 3 seed Utah Valley and top seeded Sacramento State remained the two undefeated teams at the 2025 University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Hohokam Stadium. The Wolverines bested No. 2 seed Abilene Christian 3-1 to open the day and the Hornets downed No. 4 Grand Canyon 7-5 on Thursday to punch their ticket to the semifinal round on Friday at 11 a.m. MST.
 
The winning team in the Utah Valley-Sacramento State matchup will earn automatic passage into the WAC championship round on Saturday at 3 p.m. MST on ESPN+. The remaining team will take on the winner of ACU and GCU, the first knockout contest of Friday at 3 p.m. MST, at 7 p.m. MST to determine who will earn the second championship slot.
 
Game 5 – No. 3 Utah Valley 3, No. 2 Abilene Christian 1 (Box Score)
Abilene Christian led the Thursday opener 1-0 heading to the top of the ninth inning following a strong start from Dominick Reid, who yielded three hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts in seven frames for the Wildcats. Utah Valley scored three on a two-out home run to left field by CJ Colyer to vault in front 3-1.
 
Mason Strong powered Utah Valley with two hits and a run scored, joining Colyer and Brody Block as run scorers for the Wolverines. Corbin Kirk turned in a sensational start of his own on the mound, spinning a six-hit complete game with no walks and 13 strikeouts to claim the victory.

Zandt Payne doubled as part of his two-hit game for ACU in defeat, while Diego Cardenas drove in Braden Regala for the Wildcats’ only run.
 
Game 6 – No. 1 Sacramento State 7, No. 4 Grand Canyon 5 (Box Score)
Top seeded Sacramento State raced out to a 5-1 lead after five innings and held off a late Grand Canyon rally to advance in the winner’s bracket. The Hornets and Lopes each finished with 11 hits and neither team committed an error.

Five different Sacramento State players finished with two hits in the ballgame, led by Jakob Poturnak who added four RBIs to the cause for the Hornets. Matt Masciangelo and Luis Pimentel-Guerrero each scored a pair of runs for Sacramento State.
 
Josh Wakefield logged two hits and three RBIs for GCU out of the leadoff spot. Cael Boever ripped two hits and scored two runs for the Lopes in the setback.
 
Game 7 – No. 2 Abilene Christian 9, No. 8 Utah Tech 5 (Box Score)
Utah Tech erased an early 3-0 Abilene Christian lead by leaping ahead 5-3 after seven innings. The Wildcats refused to go away quietly, scoring six in the top half of the ninth to end the Trailblazers season.

Ben Greer, Diego Cardenas and Nick Arias each registered two RBIs in the ACU win, with Cardenas ripping a two-run home run in the first inning.
 
Hunter Katschke slapped two hits and drove in three runs for Utah Tech on the night. Kace Naone reached base four times and scored three runs for the Trailblazers.
 
Game 8 – No. 7 UT Arlington 9, No. 4 Grand Canyon 7 (Box Score)
Grand Canyon’s 6-2 lead third inning evaporated when UT Arlington scored one in the third, one in the fourth and five in the fifth frame to take a 9-6 lead.

Xander McAfee led seven UTA players with double digit hits with a 3-for-5 evening, driving in two runs. Xavier Melendez drilled a home run and plated three runs for the Mavericks, and Melendez and Tate Bethel each scored two runs.
 
Michael Diaz drove in three runs for GCU in the defeat, by way of a three-run home run. Troy Sanders closed the game with two RBIs for the Lopes.
