GCU TAKES LEAD IN WAC STANDINGS
After the third week of conference play, Grand Canyon’s sweep of California Baptist on March 26 propelled the Lopes to 6-2 to claim the top spot. Utah Valley, Utah Tech and California Baptist are all tied for second, while Seattle U is in third with a WAC record of 3-3.
TEXAS BATTLE
Before the two-game series between Abilene Christian and Tarleton State took place, both teams were knotted up at 2-4 in WAC play looking to move up in the standings. ACU and TSU split the series, scoring a combined 26 runs. Tarleton State won the first game 8-5 behind an early 6-0 lead at the bottom of the first. In the second game, Abilene Christian won 7-6 scoring two runs in the sixth on a two-run single by
Riley White.
Lina Russo secured her first save as she pitched a scoreless seventh.
WAC IN THE NATIONAL STATS RANKINGS
In the latest NCAA Division I national statistics report on March 27, Abilene Christian ranked within the top 10 in doubles per game, checking in at No. 8 with 1.93. Grand Canyon ranked 16th in batting average at 0.329. Utah Valley tied for 20th in double plays per game with 0.50. Grand Canyon’s
Ashley Trierweiler tied second in the nation in total hits with 50 and ranked 18th in runs per game with 1.14. Teammate,
Kristin Fifield tied 12th in total RBIs with 39. Abilene Christian’s
Kaydee Bennett ranked 13th in the nation in batting average (0.466).
NEXT WEEK’S GAMES
Two of the top teams will go head-to-head as Grand Canyon travels to St. George, Utah to take on Utah Tech. California Baptist will take on Tarleton State, while UT Arlington hosts Southern Utah. Abilene Christian looks to start a hot streak against Utah Valley and Stephen F. Austin is set to face Seattle U on March 29.
