2025 WAC Men's Soccer Release - Week 8

TOP OF THE CONFERENCE TABLE AFTER WEEK 1 OF LEAGUE PLAY

Fireworks to begin the WAC slate in the opening week of conference play left three teams atop the league table with three points each. San José State defeated California Baptist, Grand Canyon ended Utah Valley’s seven-match unbeaten streak and San Diego State scored twice in the second half to win 3-2 at Air Force on Oct. 4. Utah Tech and UNLV battled to a spirited scoreless draw in Las Vegas elsewhere on WAC opening day.

DIOUF CONTINUES TO ROLL FOR GCU
Grand Canyon freshman forward Junior Diouf is scoring goals at a pace equaled by few other peers in NCAA Division I men’s soccer. Diouf tallied four more goals over two matches last week to push his career total to 10 goals in his first nine career matches played. Diouf ranked second in NCAA DI in goals per match (1.11) and fourth in total goals (10) and fifth in total points (23) as of the Oct. 7 NCAA statistics report. Diouf has registered at least one point in eight of his nine career matches, the only outlier being a 1-0 GCU shutout defeat at Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 14.

SJSU WITH A SEVENTH STRAIGHT RESULT TO MOVE INTO TIE FOR FIRST IN THE WAC
No team in the WAC has been any hotter than San José State over the past month, as the Spartans have turned the calendar with results in seven straight matches after posting a 5-0-2 record during that span. Included in the streak was a 2-2 tie with the current No. 1 team in the nation Stanford on Sept. 17. San José State has outscored its opposition by an aggregate goal count of 14-4 during its unbeaten streak, including an 8-2 edge in the second half. Reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Year Angel Iniguez and Arnold Matshazi have combined for seven goals and 18 points over the past seven starts for the Spartans.

SHAKEUP IN THE NCAA RPI RANKINGS
Grand Canyon assumed the top spot in the WAC in the latest NCAA RPI report released on Oct. 7, checking in 40th after compiling a 2-1-1 record thus far against the national top 100. San José State was next at 46th (1-1-2 vs. the top 100), with California Baptist just outside of the top 50 ranked 53rd with a 2-2-0 top 100 record.
