ARLINGTON, Texas – Tarleton State’s Maria Castano and Aya Ishii have been named the Jersey Mike’s A Sub Above Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tennis Players of the Month for September.
 
Castano, a sophomore, won the WAC Fall Tennis Invitational Singles final, going 3-0 in the tournament and earning the WAC’s automatic qualifier into the ITA Conference Masters Championship that will take place on November 6-9. Before the WAC Fall Invitational, Castano defeated UTSA’s Giuliana Giardina 6-1, 6-1 in the main draw of the ITA Texas Regional Championship.
 
Castano and Ishii, a freshman, won the WAC Fall Tennis Invitational Doubles final and secured the WAC’s qualifier into the ITA Conference Masters Championship. The pair defeated Utah Tech’s Mariana Zurita Berdecio/Maya Inouye 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals and took down the No. 1 seeded Alice Klinteby/Masha Vrsalovic of Abilene Chrisitan in the doubles final 6-3, 7-6 (11-9).
