HOUSTON, Texas – Northern Arizona and UNLV wrap up the final WAC Swimming and Diving Championships as Champions for the 12
th straight year for the Lumberjacks and the fifth consecutive year for the Rebels.
Northern Arizona compiled 694.5 points, over 100 points more than the runner-up New Mexico State who totaled 534 points. Grand Canyon rounded out the women’s top three with 529 points.
UNLV tallied 802 points, just beating out California Baptist who fought hard with 776 points. Air Force totaled the third most points on the men’s side with 638.5.
California Baptist’s
Remi Fabiani continued to etch his name in the record books as he broke his second all-time WAC record this week in the men’s 100 freestyle, setting the record at 41.83. Fabiani’s time is the only sub-42 second time recorded in this event in WAC championship history. This is his second 100 freestyle title in the last three years.
UNLV’s
Daniel Nicusan also broke his second all-time WAC record this week, this time in the 200 breaststroke. Nicusan posted a record-breaking time of 1:53.15, breaking his own record that he set earlier this year on Dec. 7. Nicusan now owns the fastest 100 and 200 breaststroke times in the WAC.
Northern Arizona’s
Casey Craffey captured her fourth consecutive title in the women’s 1650 freestyle, winning the event in 16:28.17 and four seconds over second place. California Baptist’s
Mark Kovacsics also defended his title in the mile-long event, claiming his third straight championship in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 14:48.48.
Idaho’s
Ginger Kiefer captured her third gold of the week in the women’s 200 backstroke by over three seconds, clocking in at 1:55.07.
CBU’s
Sofia Maksimova knocked off the two-time defending champion
Maria Brunlehner in the women’s 100 freestyle, winning with a time of 48.76. Brunlehner of GCU finished with the silver at 49.10.
The Lancer’s
Mario Del Valle came up clutch when he needed and won the men’s platform diving event, taking the lead on the final dive on the night and totaling a score of 409.05. Del Valle claimed his second gold medal of the week and passed GCU’s
Omar El Sayed who ended with a total of 386.60 points.
