UTAH TECH TAKES THE OLD HAMMER RIVALRY SERIES IN PART OF FIVE-GAME WINNING STREAK
Utah Tech is entering the week on a five-game winning streak which included a three-game sweep in the Old Hammer Rivalry at Utah Valley.
Miller Durham was tabbed the WAC Player of the Week after recording a .636 batting average (14-for-22). Durham is on a 10-game hitting streak and has scored at least one run in 10 of the last 11 games. The Trailblazers will head to Riverside this weekend to take on the Lancers in a series battle for the top of the WAC standings.
TEXANS HOLD OFF LANCERS IN CRUCIAL WAC SERIES
Tarleton State was able to hold off California Baptist on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of one-run victories to claim the series.
Anthony Treto closed out the wins for the Texans, picking up his fourth and fifth saves of the season and helping Tarleton State to a current three-way tie for second in the WAC standings with CBU and Sacramento State.
LAY PREVAILS IN SAC STATE/UTA PITCHING DUEL
Sacramento State and UT Arlington opened up their series with a pitching duel between the Hornets’
Ethan Lay and the Mavericks’
Caylon Dygert. Both pitchers went seven innings deep as Lay held UTA scoreless while Dygert surrendered just two runs. Lay’s Friday performance allowed the Hornets to secure the victory and earn himself the WAC Pitcher of the Week honor.
THREE STRAIGHT GAMES WITH 10+ K’S FOR MALKI
California Baptist’s
Michael Malki tossed a seven-inning complete game in the series opener where the Lancers run-ruled Tarleton State 12-1. Malki posted 12 strikeouts, tying his season-high, for his third straight game with double-digit strikeouts. It was also his third consecutive game going seven innings deep while getting the win. Malki improved his season record to 8-0, becoming only one of four pitchers nationally to hold a perfect win percentage with at least eight wins.
KNOTT’S WALK-OFF HOMER CAPS OFF SIX-RUN NINTH INNING RALLY FOR UTA
UT Arlington rallied from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Sacramento State 8-6 on a walk-off two-run home run by
Preston Knott on Sunday, his second home run of the season and second in the last four games. The walk-off prevented the series sweep for the Hornets as the Mavericks are now only one game behind second place in the WAC standings.
